Chapter 3 – The Mysterious Neighbor | A Cat with Story

Chapter 3 – The Mysterious Neighbor

In the previous chapter, Clara’s unease grew with Estrella’s peculiar behavior, especially the cat’s fixed and enigmatic gaze. The following morning, the family’s routine is suddenly broken by the sound of the doorbell, and the unexpected visit of the mysterious neighbor, Dona Aurora. With her ancestral wisdom, she seems to hold the key to unraveling the enigma of the feline’s “deep silences.”
The Mysterious Neighbor - Dona Aurora visiting Clara and Estrella

The morning arrived, but the relief brought by the sunlight could not dispel the strange unease that had settled in Clara since the night before. The persistent image of Estrella staring fixedly at the wall, seeming to see something no one else could, still dominated her thoughts. Clara tried, unsuccessfully, to work; her mind was completely hijacked by that mystery.

Lucas, however, carried on with his normal routine. Immersed in a universe of imaginary battles, he moved his action figures across the living room rug, completely oblivious to his mother’s anxiety.

The Unexpected Visit from the Mysterious Neighbor

Then, the sound of the doorbell pulled Clara from her reverie. It was Dona Aurora, the neighbor from the floor below. A petite and enigmatic figure, with impeccable silver hair and a sweet smile that somehow belied the sharpness of her gaze.

Dona Aurora was an intimate friend of Clara’s mother and her faithful confidante. After her mother’s passing, she maintained her affection, always visiting Clara and Lucas to see how they were doing, almost like a grandmother. For Clara, she was just the sweet neighbor from downstairs. However, to the other residents of the building and the neighborhood, Dona Aurora was seen with a respect that bordered on reverence. She was known for her stories, told in a peculiar tone, and for a knowledge that went beyond the trivial, as if she possessed a gift for understanding what others could not. It was a kind of ancestral wisdom that most people didn’t understand, but instinctively trusted.

“Good morning, my dear!” Dona Aurora greeted, her voice a little hoarse but full of sympathy. She carried a small cloth bag in her hands: “I’m just passing by to drop off some fresh herbs I bought at the market this morning, for your tea. I thought of you. And I heard you have a new little animal here, don’t you? The doorman Antonio told me just now when I arrived!”

Clara smiled, feeling relieved by the break in routine:

“Good morning, Dona Aurora! How kind of you! I always mean to make herbal tea but never remember to buy the herbs. Thank you so much! Yes, Lucas rescued a kitten. Would you like to come in for a minute to meet her?”

Dona Aurora’s clear blue eyes shone with genuine curiosity.

“Oh, what an offer I can’t refuse! I’ve always loved cats. They have a wisdom that few animals possess, a gaze that seems to see right through the soul.”

The Neighbor’s Wisdom

Upon entering, Dona Aurora went straight to Estrella, who was on the sofa, elegantly lying as if she were part of the furniture. The cat simply blinked slowly, without moving, her eyes half-closed in apparent sleep.

“Oh, what a beautiful creature!” Dona Aurora exclaimed, approaching slowly. Her face lit up. “It seems she’s already adapted well to her new home.”

Clara watched the scene with a pang of expectation and, why not, a slight frustration. Cats, she knew, were creatures of curiosity, of welcoming meows or a quick hiding place. But Estrella remained with her usual calm, almost indifferent, as if the presence of the mysterious neighbor were the most commonplace thing in the world. That lack of reaction, combined with her muteness, made Clara increasingly intrigued.

Dona Aurora sat next to Estrella on the sofa, extending her hand gently toward the kitten.

“Hello, my little star,” she whispered, her voice filled with a singular sweetness, almost like an enchantment.

Estrella did not flinch or pull away. The cat simply watched the hand approach and, with a subtle movement, rubbed the top of her head against Dona Aurora’s outstretched palm. There was no meow, not even an audible purr, just a slight, almost imperceptible shiver in her black and white fur. It seemed as if the cat was responding to a language that only Dona Aurora could understand, a silent secret between the two of them.

“She has an impressive calm,” Dona Aurora commented, and there was something in her voice that captured Clara’s attention.

It wasn’t just a casual observation, a compliment on the cat’s docility. There was an air of knowledge, a note of meaning that Clara couldn’t immediately decipher. It was as if the neighbor was recognizing something familiar, instead of just praising the calm behavior of a pet.

Clara, feeling a slight apprehension mixed with curiosity, asked:

“Too calm, maybe? She doesn’t meow, you know. It’s… peculiar. I’ve never seen a cat like this.”

Dona Aurora slowly stood up, her eyes fixed on Estrella for a moment before turning back to Clara. A small smile formed on her lips, laden with a wisdom that Clara did not yet fully understand.

“Ah, my dear. Some silences are deeper than any words. And some eyes… some eyes carry stories that go far beyond what we can imagine. You just have to know how to look.”

She paused, and her gaze seemed to travel to a distant past, to memories that Clara could not reach.

Then she smiled enigmatically:

“Observe, my daughter, observe. There are things that only the most attentive notice. Pay attention to the details, to the smallest ones. Because the greatest mystery may not lie in what reveals itself, but in what refuses to make a sound.”

She paused, her eyes fixed on Clara, as if planting a seed of doubt.

Then, she looked at the clock on the wall, hurrying:

“Well, I have to go! I have a pie in the oven, and it must be ready now. I’ll send you a slice to try later. Good morning, my dear!”

Clara closed the door, but the morning’s calm had completely shattered. The mysterious neighbor’s visit, the way she looked at Estrella, her enigmatic words about “deep silences” and “hidden mysteries” – it all added up, reinforcing that initial gleam in the cat’s jade eyes. The unease now mixed with a new and curious feeling: maybe she wasn’t so alone in her observations. Something far beyond her comprehension was, in fact, beginning to reveal itself. As much as she tried to keep her feet on the ground, reality seemed to be stretching in increasingly unexpected directions.

What Does Dona Aurora Know?

So, what did you think of Dona Aurora’s visit? Did you feel the same sense of unease as Clara? The cat Estrella and her peculiar behavior are getting more and more intriguing, aren’t they? What do you think Dona Aurora knows, or what Estrella’s secret is?
